At the very start of this Prayer Closet-the most important aspect on this subject is-faith. If you do not have faith it's futile to expect any answers. Then, where is your faith directed? To whom or what? No false gods will hear you, no stone statues will answer your cries. No form of meditation to the east or west, or to a sun god will get you the answers you seek. The only true God, who hears and answers prayer, is the same God that Abraham Isaac and Jacob followed. The One who was revealed in God in the flesh-Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God. If you've placed your faith-though it may be the size of a mustard seed- in the Lord, He can work with you, and if you are determined to seek Him with your heart-He can increase that tiny bud of faith, to see the hand of God in all your circumstances; and see the circumstances change, for the better. Then, you can begin to learn the ways of prayer, that He pays attention to, and moves Him to answer your petitions. Let's begin to break a few down here.
Remind God of His entire responsibility. "There is none beside thee to help." The odds against Asa were enormous. There was a million of men in arms against him, besides three hundred chariots. It seemed impossible to hold his own against that vast multitude. There were no allies who would come to his help; his only hope, therefore, was in God. It may be that your difficulties have been allowed to come to so alarming a pitch that you may be compelled to renounce all creature aid, to which in lesser trials you have had recourse, and cast yourself back on your Almighty Friend.
Put God between yourself and the foe. To Asa’s faith, Jehovah seemed to stand between the might of Zerah and himself, as one who had no strength. Nor was he mistaken. We are told that the Ethiopians were destroyed before the Lord and before His host, as though celestial combatants flung themselves against the foe in Israel’s behalf, and put the large host to rout, so that Israel had only to follow up and gather the spoil. Our God is Jehovah of hosts, who can summon unexpected reinforcements at any moment to aid His people. Believe that He is there between you and your difficulty, and what baffles you will flee before Him, as clouds before the gale. -- F. B. Meyer

Faith is the sixth sense. It makes us as sure of unseen or future things, which we know about only through the divine Word, as we are of things which we can see and touch. When we are aware of the reality of these things, we naturally take them into account when we act. Rothschild laid the foundation of his fortune because he had news that the battle of Waterloo had been won, a day before anyone else in Britain. That fact enabled him to buy up all the depressed money-shares, which rose with marvelous buoyancy as soon as the news was universally disseminated. Faith does this for us!
Noah built the ark because he believed that the flood would befall. Abraham left his country because he realized that Canaan would be his. The pilgrims and martyrs of all the ages have been derided by their companions, who would have acted similarly if only they had looked with faith into the unseen. And God never fails such. He always bears witness with His gifts.
